tomorrow night. remember when newt gingrich clocked the governor in the south carolina debate last spring, romney came back strong in florida. the man who helped prepare the governor for those debates, brett o'donnell joins us now. you really know this turf because you worked for john mccain when he ran against barak obama in 2008 and now in the primary season, you worked for mitt romney. let's assess the governor's strengths and weaknesses as a debater first. strengths? >> well, i think the governor is a very good messenger. he's a good orator, he can deliver a speech. he's very good when he's on message and on offense. as you saw in the debates in florida against newt gingrich when he got on offense, the governor was very effective. when he leans into a debate, he can be pretty effective. >> bill: all right. weakness? >> weaknesses, when he gets -- like most every politician, when he gets defensive, that's when he makes mistakes. the $10,000 bet came when governor romney was being defensive about his health care policy and there have been other instances where other debaters have

gingrich's campaign. you say the pie is baloney line is one of his strongest hits during his campaign run against mitt romney. >> can be drop some of the pious baloney? you ran in '94 and lost. that's why you weren't serving in the senate for rick santorum. suddenly citizenship showed up in your mind, level with the american people. you have been running since the 1 990s. >> how much of those zingers are prethought out and what does mitt romney have to do to avoid taking a big hit tomorrow night? >> that was all newt. part of great thing about newt, he knew the topic, knew the weak points, but prepared to answer the question. if you can come up with pious baloney, that puts a cherry on top. if you googled baloney two hours after the debate, you would get oscar meyer and then newt gingrich. romney has the same opportunity, when it comes to obama's populous messages, i'm one of the common guys and you're out of touch. romney has an opportunity to say you have made $2 million in one year, you spent more money in your time in the white house than the royal family. how are you you one of t

a guy fighting for them. they don't want to see a patsy. if they lose -- >> they want newt gingrich in the primaries? is that what they want, the base or whoever you talk about, they want newt gingrich snapping at the media and kind of performing before the stage, given the theatrics you referenced? >> it's a split personality thing. mitt romney as i've been writing for months is a flawed candidate who won in a weak field. look who came in second. rick santorum. newt gingrich came in third, ron paul came in fourth. as i wrote that, that's not a field. that's a therapy group. of that group, you know, mitt romney was the most, is the most electable of that group. the process worked. i don't think the republican party can really blame anybody or even themselves for nominating the wrong guy. the trouble is the guy who is the best of the field lacks the common touch that wealthy, privileged people need. franklin roosevelt, privileged, wealthy, had the common touch. john f. kennedy had the common touch. ted kennedy and bobby kennedy did. nelson rockefeller did in new york. mitt romney doe

debate i guess it was in florida with newt gingrich where he basically took gingrich's pants off on the issue of what was in his investment portfolio and won that state by a big margin. this is obviously tk- different. it's a national audience, not a republican audience, he has to win people over. it's a different kind of challenge over a sitting president who is pretty smooth performer. what john roberts said is right, debates sometimes make a difference but not very often. normally what happened in debates people for you going in are still for you coming out and not a lot of minds get chained. chris christie saying it could change everything, it could happen but not very much. martha: if somebody loses their pants it might be a game changer. we'll be watch that very closely. >> that depends, martha entirely on the design of the electri lecterns. >> we'll wait for the town hall format and hope for that perhaps. you just mentioned chris christie, what do you think he is up to by that comment? >> i have no idea and i'm sure the romney headquarters in boston, they are scratching their

energized than we've seen. >> think of the republican primary debates. it was newt gingrich and rick santorum. he needed to turn it on in the republican primaries, and he did. >> steve, what do you think the ultimate impact is going to be? is this the game change moment to use the term that we hate? >> i swear we're living in this mirror image of 2004 where the bush role is played by obama and where kerry is played by romney. i remember september 30th, 2004, watching that debate and watching the reaction after that debate between kerry and bush and the reaction of democrats. i thought of taking some of the quotes from some republican and conservative pundits talking about how this changes the race, just switch in kerry's name for romney, switch in obama for bush. exact same sort of mental adjustment. the silver lining for that for democrats is bush went on, and he didn't i think win the next two debates but recovered and was serviceable in the next two debates. >> do we really think that anybody who was a lean obama voter changed their mind and said, now i'm going to vote for mitt ro

, it is about america. but you have a lot of republicans, newt gingrich, for example, saying, hey, mitt romney, get out there, pick a fight, and win it. jim acosta with me now from the romney campaign. the debate, of course, tomorrow night in denver, you, sir, are in littleton, colorado. should we take mitt romney at face value when he says this debate is not about me winning? >> reporter: well, brooke, i think this is all part of the debate expectations game that has been going on for several days now. i think you also sort of heard mitt romney downplay some of the talk that has been going on since the new york times reported over the weekend that, you know, mitt romney is preparing all the zingers for the debate and you heard people saying maybe he's not preparing zingers. a lot of this is the head fake to the head fake to the head fake. of course, mitt romney and the president are both probably working on lines of attack that they'll deliver at this debate. that is sort of standard operating procedure. you saw that scott brown, elizabeth warren debate last night in massachusett

and he was very good at getting under the skin of rick perry and newt gingrich. that's something obama has to watch out for as well. >> erin, you've been in ohio. unemployment there is at 7.2% which is better than the national average. the president's leading in the latest polls there. so how concerned is the romney camp about that state, and what is their plan? >> there is some serious concern in the romney campaign and in republicans throughout ohio that president obama is in much better shape. they point to cleveland where there is a very heavy population base, manufacturing is big there and the auto bailout really did help industries up there. and some of the thinking goes, if president obama can turn out a lot of people in northern ohio, it's over in ohio. and they might be best to look elsewhere. now, the romney campaign is taking a harder line against china than ever before. he's always been very strong against china. so that's a message that they think will resonate in ohio. another thing we heard from mitt romney tempering his tax plan, saying he is planning to cut exemp

libertarians have made it onto the ballot. and you have to have 10% of the vote, gingrich is made to go out and vote -- so it convinces me to go out and vote. guest: the next cover story will deal with precisely this subject. the libertarian party is working to get permanently on balance. these are perfectly good reasons to vote expressively. unfortunately, it will not determine the outcome of the election that is dominated by two parties. newell also not get the libertarian vote on the ballot -- you will also not get the libertarian vote on the ballot in your state. even when we are talking about third parties, smaller scale elections, the numbers are still pretty big. again, though, very happy for anybody who enjoys wearing their "i voted" sticker. and anyone likes to vote for the libertarian guy, by all means, but understand you are not influencing who gets on the ballot. catherine mangu-ward is the managing editor of reason magazine. if you encourage people not to vote, do you risk having the candidates that you prefer losing the election be on the ballot? are you responsible,
